18th Century Women's Caps

My 18th century reproduction caps are made in a varitey of fabrics including handerchief weight linen which is suitable for middle and lower class impressions. Fine linen, suitable for middle and upper class impressions and Italian organdy which works well for the extremely high fashion caps of the 1770s. All of the caps are completely hand sewn, each piece of the cap is narrowed hemmed and the hemmed edges are then joined together. All of the caps are adjustable with tape ties in the crown. While there are few 18th century adult women's caps that survive here in the colonies, there are collections in the UK such as the Victoria and Albert Musuem and Manchester City Galleries that do have 18th century caps with written descriptions and unfortunatlely few images. The cap styles are mainly based on contempory images in portraits and printed media of the British satire genre. Images of the inspiration for caps styles can be found on my 18th century blog.
